Starting off a new series, 101 things to do in Santa Barbara… attend a polo match.
Every Sunday afternoon from April through October world class equestrian polo is played at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club in Carpinteria – the the third-oldest club in the United States. Practices and tournament games and played throughout the week, but it’s the Sunday afternoon Finals which are a best bet. Tournament Finals are played at 1pm and 3 pm on Sundays, with a nominal $10 admission fee.
A polo match lasts about two hours and is divided into 6 timed periods called chukkers. The field is 300 yards long and 160 yards wide – the largest field in organized sport. The object of the game is to move the polo ball down-field, hitting it through the goal for a score. During half time, spectators receive a complimentary glass of bubbly and get to participate in a fabulous tradition called divot stomping.
So grab a blanket, pack a lunch and spend a fabulous afternoon at the polo fields, 3300 Via Real in Carpinteria. For more information, visit www.sbpolo.com or call, (805) 684-5819. Dress code is casual; however, many people enjoy dressing up.
