The Film Festival, Summer Solstice and Old Spanish Days/ Fiesta posters get a lot of attention around town, so here’s the new 2013 Santa Barbara Earth Day poster for the many art critics. It was created by Joel Conroy of Lil’ Planets. Viewer thoughts?

Meh
Anonymous… Meh… Time for SB Earth Day Council to FILTER…
I love the lighthearted approach to the poster. The glow emanating from the “Earth” against our Santa Barbara-blue sky gives a sunny and optimistic feel to the image.
I love this! Joel is an amazing artist with many great talents, and his line of Lil Planets are all spectacular! This was a great choice for the earth day festival poster, and I love seeing support for a local artist!
A mostly deforested and naked planet…with Santa Barbara on the horizon, or…..lots to think about here. I like it.
That is the type of perception I would expect of someone who views humans as a pestilence.
In reality, it looks like a photosphere effect of a beach view. Anyone with a current Nexus Android phone can make a similar image. Just to to the beach, spin around and you have your “deforested, naked planet”, no evil humans destruction required.
You are an idiot.
I like it! It’s simple and beautiful, but at the same time disturbing. It catches your attention and makes you want to take a closer look at the unusual view of the earth. Is it an image of an earth that has been desertified, or a close-up view of a healthy beach? Very apropos as this is the choice we confront right now with the threat of climate change…
Right on Katie! Time for us to support local art, not criticize!
Wonder if that barren earth look is intentional or just some cool photoshop work
Indigenous cultures around the world are in side-splitting laughter right now..
If “earth day” were truely about conservation, then would`nt NOT using the planet`s resources for one lousey day be a better way?..Just like valentine`s day is supposed to be about love & romance…then how are we showing our love for our significant other the rest of the year? I guess gathering at the sunken gardens, creating a mess, trampling the grass & kicking around an inflatable “earth-ball” is enough to convince one`s self of their ecological awareness…
B+
Did the ocean drain away? Shouldn’t there be more water there if this is representing the earth? The text is clear and large enough so I am informed. To my Earth Day friends… it’s OK to shower. Enjoy your religious holiday, Merry Earth Day!
Can you get a memo to the Earth Day people that its Earth DAY! not Earth Weekend. Thought it was cool on a Saturday in the courthouse gardens but they’ve ruined it. Just one big hippie drunk fest. If they wanted to add a second day so they can smoke more weed fine but it is earth DAY.
Live bands and beer gardens filled with drunks and plastic cups. Thats not Earth Day.
Not bad, not epic. But I am a little surprised at the artists’ claim of “My unique photographic process” as people have been doing this for years.

Yes there are apps that attempt to swirl a pano into a little world, but the process is not as easy as one may think. I’ve known Joel for years and when renowned photographers comment to him that he has a seamless approach on panoramics, the genuine creativity speaks for itself.
Bottom line, this image was CHOSEN by the council to represent Earth Day. To the idiot that commented about being able to replicate this unique image with an android app, get with the times man, Android?! Pshh! And really, SB Earth Day is a damn celebration of all things Eco and earthy. I have NEVER driven by the park after earth day weekend to see it littered with red cups or trash… For those of you commenting that side, perhaps you are reflecting on your times in Isla Vista. This image is unique in that it does represent SB and I love it! This local artist is a down to earth guy and a true creative genius. I have been to his Lil Planets exhibit as well as his 3-d exhibit, and not only does he shoot photography, he is an award winning graphic designer and web developer. Congrats Joel, this image deserves to be THE image for 2013 SB Earth Day!
Amanda….Get a grip. The world does`nt have to idolize your hero…
The more I read your defense, the more I realize what a loon you are.
Gaia worshippers…spreading tolerance and good will since 1970
3 billion plus people living in developing countries consuming energy and resources like crazy versus a few thousand tree-huggers in Santa Barbara. Go team. Earth Day energy and resources far better spent elsewhere. You are not changing the world from your perch in Alameda park. Not even close. Give it a rest.
