Is Santa Barbara Prepared for a Natural Disaster?

Seven years ago today, on January 10th, 2005 at 1:20 p.m., the unstable hillside above La Conchita collapsed. The mudslide buried four blocks of the coastal town, killing ten people and injuring another 14. Fifteen homes were completely destroyed by the flow which reached 100 miles-an-hour. The mudslide, which followed a week of heavy rain, shut down Highway 101 for over ten days.
