Total Lunar Eclipse in Santa Barbara

Sky watchers in Santa Barbara will be treated to a lunar eclipse early Saturday. The earth will cast its shadow on the moon beginning at 4:45 a.m. and for almost an hour, the disk of the full moon will almost disappear, turning a dark, rusty red.

From our vantage point, the moon may seem larger than usual, since it will loom close to the western horizon, creating a common optical illusion and one of the prettiest lunar eclipses seen from Southern California in years.

There will not be a total lunar eclipse again until April 15, 2014 so it may be worth an early wake-up call.

Nice graphic — where’d it come from?

The Eclipse was beautiful! It was reddish and like someone had turned the lights way down low! You can see some awesome images at NASA!
