Morro Bay: Discover Your Better Nature

By Georgina Stassi

One of the most interesting things I read when deciding to visit Morro Bay was the line “Discover Your Better Nature.”  So what exactly do they mean by that?

Does it mean donning my pith helmet for the internationally acclaimed Winter Bird Festival held every January to see hundreds of different species migrating through the miles of the breathtaking Morro Estuary?  Will I be skimming across the bay by kayak being escorted by all wild pinniped guides and experiencing a calm, communion with nature like never before, possibly, getting a up close and personal view of the sacred Peregrin Falcon Sanctuary? Or maybe a round of golf on the changeling sea view course or touring the Natural History Museum and learning more about the marvels of nature. How about boarding the the Lost Isle Tour Boat  with the seasoned oyster farmer, Neil Maloney and seeing how oysters are actually grown and then getting to enjoy them raw on the half-shell with an amazing local wine from the wine region of Paso Robles, just minutes away.

morrobayrockOr, maybe I’ll reconnect with my better nature just by lounging all morning in my bay view room watching the sun come up over the giant Morro Rock (left).  After my morning coffee, maybe I’ll find the energy to walk over to enjoy a satisfying breakfast of locally procured foods prepared by Sunset Magazine’s Savor event, Battle of the Bay Contender and Chef Keith Sowell of  Frankie & Lolas?  Maybe it means lunch at one of the many local fresh seafood restaurants along the Embarcadero in Town or North Morro Bay. This before an afternoon of wine tasting at the new Stacks Wine Bar.  Maybe I’ll live vicariously by getting a glimpse of local surfer Jeff Grover in action whose been catching waves in Morro Bay for the past 25 years?  Maybe I’ll just take a leisurely stroll with my dog Max visiting the many pet friendly places on the Embarcadero?

Max and I have never gotten a chance to enjoy a vacation together because very few places offer as many pet friendly establishments as Morro Bay.  Maybe, I’ll do it all at my own pace and in my own time? So how do I know so much about what’s up in Morro Bay? Well, I did it and I loved it!  And most importantly, my nature was very much so improved after I experienced Morro Bay and I was able to discover my better nature with great pleasure and leisure — something that we all need to do more often!
