Independent Bookstore Coming to Santa Barbara

A new independent bookstore is coming to Santa Barbara in June, 2013. Granada Books will be the first Independent bookstore to open in nearly 20 years.

“We’ve been working on this for 18 months,” co-owner Sharon Hoshida said. The store will be reportedly located four doors up from the Granada Theatre on State Street. “This neighborhood has become a vibrant center for the arts with several theaters and a large free trade public market being built right around the corner from the bookstore. It is the goal of the partners to make Granada a local spotlight not only as a bookstore, but also for local talents. We really want to have writers, artists, craftspeople, and musicians provide midday entertainment for downtown workers.”

Glad the Borders and Barnes and Noble are gone.

I sure hope they can pay the rent and create a niche for themselves. It takes a lot of courage to open a bookstore these days! Wishing them well.

Great! Isn’t that about where the Earthling began? What’s the free trade public market mentioned? Is that the super upscale Arlington condos on Chapala where Von’s used to be?

    who’s should be whose.
Who’s is short for who is, and the sentence would then read “who is store will be located.”

EdHat created a “story” on this to try to direct traffic to their site. They posted it as a “reader question” rather than link to SB View. They never mention where the “reader” heard about the new bookstore.

    Pretty sleazy, Ed.

I like Edhat although many of its picky/defensive policies drive me crazy and hope it’s not shutting down.
That being said, they seem to be transitioning from the cats and cranks format into a photo blog with the same 2 or three people posting endless Photoshoped photos of sunsets and then complimenting one another for their so-called art. Doesn’t seem to be the way to go.

I do hope they figure out how to turn it around a reach out to a wider audience. I might even resubscribe.

I guess Peter was the voice of reason over there. I’ve noticed comments now are deleted without a trace and threads are closed with no indication why. The content is obviously getting little attention, with retread postings like “where is the best place to buy a postcard”. Like most online sources who overreach editorially and punish the majority of their users (the best description I heard of them was “crowdsourced news site populated with…trolls”) they will likely go out with a whimper…

I tried to comment over there on this story (which they got here but didn’t provide a link). First I got a notification that my comments had to be less than 1000 characters, then after I edited them down, I got a notification that only “community members” can post between the hours of 9pm and 6am. Since I am unwelcome, I am done adding clicks to that website that once offered so much promise, but has gotten so petty with its silly and restrictive rules.

Since those rules don’t seem to be driving increases in paid subscribers, they are likely having the opposite effect of restricting content and opinions that benefit even the paid members.

Every website that accepts comments has rules about length and substance, including this one where comments can (and sometimes do) go into “moderation” without explanation or get completely deleted.

The Indy and edhat both note when the comments have been removed, the latter having them amusingly still visible in a separate category below the others. No doubt but there are comments that are simply not published without notice there as well as here.

As for the new bookstore (hurrah!) I thought the source for both stories was PW, the link given above by a fellow Anon.
