“Since I made the painful decision to stop publishing the Valley Journal, rumors have been rampant,” writes Nancy Crawford-Hall. “Most everybody knows that changes are coming in January, and I am going to be hit hard with new taxes due to Obamacare. As a result, I am unable to continue to pay reasonable salaries to the professionals working for this newspaper. Everything you have heard about how small business has been given 18 tax breaks is simply a lie. I have received no tax breaks on anything anywhere — and furthermore, I expect huge tax increases next year and the years following, because I am one of those who actually pay taxes. I guess you get what somebody may have voted for.
“In the meantime, I close with a heavy heart and wish my former employees good luck in the future,” the owner of the Santa Ynez Valley Journal continues in a Letter the Editor published by the Santa Barbara News-Press. “I know they all have the highest of recommendations from the Journal. The newspaper is not being sold, just ceasing publication until we have a more reasonable government.”

Good bye Nancy,
I am sure your decision had nothing to do with the fact that the entire print media
has been completely eclipsed by the internet. Easier to blame someone else.
Couldn’t have said it better myself!
good bye. Your reasoning for closure continues a long SY Journal history of misrepresentation and outright lies and that negativity will not be missed. As a resident of the Valley, I feel that this is a step in the right direction… good for the environment.
How about a business model that generates revenue instead of blaming others. Take responsibility, find a way to generate more revenues, nothing is promised to you but living in America you have exorbitant privileges that most the world don’t.
Shes nuts. Sad that she has to let a good staff go because of these crazy right wing beliefs
Editorial Policy of the Santa Ynez Valley Journal: Never let the truth interfere with a story.
Typical reactions from a bunch of liberal nut-jobs (I say nut because that word has already been tossed around). Just because she’s not successful enough, like the rest of you apparently, to pick up the tab for everyone else doesn’t mean she should be ridiculed. “nothing is promised to you but living in America”, you say? Right.
Try your hand at a small business for once, rather than suckling off the government teat, and see how well it goes for you.
Crawford-Hall is only trying to make a cheap political point. Obama has lowered the taxes on small businesses 18 times.
Crawford-Hall spent nearly $500,000 trying to buy Steve Pappas a seat on the supervisory board, flits around the country showing off and competing her expensive horses, and has a successful breeding facility.
She could have well afforded to provide healthcare to her employees, but chose to close her right-wing newspaper instead. Whining about her federal taxes going up 3% isn’t go to cut it. Most of us see through her lies and paranoia.
So changes that are coming in January are the reason you are ceasing publication? Right, it wasn’t complete lack of creativity during the era of the death of print media that did you in it was the big bad government. At some point I may stop being amazed at the hypocrisy of the “personal responsibility” crowd to play the victim card so convincingly.
A few years ago the Santa Ynez Valley Journal wrote a story listing me as the head of an organization that I was actually fighting against in public hearings (city council meetings, etc.).
I wrote to them and asked them to print a correction, and they refused.
I heard that Obamacare caused the stock market crash and killed JFK.
The only thing worse than the SY Valley Journal’s journalism is the current News-Press’s poor attempt at covering its community. But then it was Nancy’s lie and she can tell it anyway she wants, just like Wendy…
Good riddance to another rightwing lunatic without scruples, morality, or character. The Valley is instantly a better place to be without this trashmistress LYING about everything. Buh-bye now, you old cooter.
Will the last business to leave California please turn out the lights… Never mind, no energy is being produced so the lights will just go off by themselves.
HAHAHA! This is so funny. I think Obamacare and the tax hikes are crap too but I don’t believe they put this news paper out of business. I think the real reason is a failure to keep up with modern media and from what I hear, printing bull crap lies. Good riddance!
It’s because of panicky knee-jerk reactions like that of this newspaper publisher that I stopped voting Republicans decades ago. As a long-time reporter for the News-Press in the days when it was a real newspaper, I can attest to the fact that newspapers are dying at an alarming rate and began doing so years before Obama was around to blame for it. Nice try, Nancy, but it just doesn’t fly.
George bush’s fault here too.
