Santa Barbara photo of the week by Bill Heller, click to enlarge photo.

This week was great for fishing, at least if you’re a Brown Pelican in the Santa Barbara area. There are almost always pelicans feeding off the coast here, but there must have been some impressive schools of fish off of Butterfly Beach a few nights ago. The two Pelicans on the surface behind the dive bombers just surfaced from their dives and there must have been hundreds of attempts. If you look closely to the left of the photo you can see a nose sticking out of the water of what I believe must be a sea otter. But it’s hard to say since I was paying so much attention to the Pelicans I did not actually see him until I looked at the photo.

Wow! Could be my favorite one yet. Love the sea life right off the beach.
Thanks Anonymous! Yeah, I could stand and watch them until the sun goes down. And I did! It will never cease to amaze me how such a big bird can be so graceful. I love to watch them surf too, just flying along at the crest of the wave getting a little lift from it. One day I’ll get a good shot of that too!
So beautiful! For me this is what Santa Barbara is all about!
Thanks Bob! Oh yeah, sights like this really make me thankful for our beautiful corner of the world.
Frikkin’ awesome!
Only thing missing is a few jumping dolphins
.Wonderful Montectio
I’ll have to work on that, but I hear their modeling fees are pretty high. I already owe the Pelicans more fish than I can find.
Probably a sea lion.
