Santa Barbara’s Sign Ordinance Seeing Stars

The grand re-opening of Carl’s Jr. on Milpas Street makes a mockery of Santa Barbara’s Sign Ordinance (PDF)

“It is the intent of the City of Santa Barbara to limit the size, type and location of signs in order to minimize their distracting effect on drivers and thereby improve traffic safety. As identification devices, signs must not subject the citizens of the City to excessive competition for their visual attention. As appropriate identification devices, signs must harmonize with the building, the neighborhood and other signs in the area.”

Want to see a mockery?…check out the floor to second floor ceiling exterior ads that Spectrum Uptown just applied to their windows. Nice use of their newly increased dues.

What is competition for citizen’s visual attention? Does this imply that those operating a motor vehicle on the sidewalk in front of this resturant might run the sign down?

Ok, nice headline and supporting ordinance, but where is the photo of the sign you are talking about? Does the restaurant have new signs? If so why don’t you take a photo of them…I don’t want to have drive over there just to see what you are talking about

Barry, did you read the PDF link provided? The many pages of restrictions about signs? And did you not see the photo in the copy of this story of a human in Carl’s Jr costume holding a sign? I skimmed the PDF but I could see this guy in the suit was in violation of city code.

Dan, yes I see the person in costume. That was my point exactly. The ordinance has only to do with signs not this. Had they placed sandwich boards all over the sidewalks that would be a whole another topic. This article was poorly researched and I feel put on just to stir up controversy. I know that the View is heavily against the government, but it’s stories like this that brings down their credibility, especially since they actually referenced the sign ordinance itself and didn’t actually read it…or didn’t realize that the photo was of a person. I am feeling hungry now for a Famous Star!
