This is a great service. It puts you in the middle of the action in your own home town and makes you a better informed citizen. Just sign up for the city police alerts first and give it a try.

It’s obvious CSI hasn’t tried out the SBPD feed. If he/she did, they’d find this service appears to be just a press release regurgitation like the ones edhat posts and is not live at all, with only one incident posted after the fact each day

I’d rather they had a comprehensive police blotter every week and had a full scanner feed on twitter like the County Fire department does. Just one more failed attempt to divert attention from the day to day failings of Scam’s department.

BTW, they seem to have an iPhone app as well as the above methods of access.

El Smurfo, when you comment on posts here I sometimes agree with you. But I think you should back off from CSI. It’s only obvious to you what CSI thinks. I’m willing to let CSI speak.

And there you go again, bringing Edhat into the conversation. I witnessed something good the other day when Edhat linked a story from SB View. Why shouldn’t Edhat link to here? Both sites got a lot of hits and comments, isn’t that good for them?

If you really want to see a comprehensive police blotter why don’t you become the Roger of SB View?

I fail to see what you are commenting on? I actually went to the site, registered, saw the SBPD feed and gave my opinion. CSI can speak all they like, just as I can refute their argument, but it sounds like either they are a shill for the site or have not actually tried it, because it certainly doesn’t “put you in the middle” of anything other than the usual SBPD daily PR cycle.

In regards to edhat, I really didn’t say anything derogatory other than they post the same press releases as this site, i.e. this site offers nothing new or useful. They can link here all they like, but comment jacking is generally not polite when both sites rely on user generated content and discussion. It’s a bit like me taking one of your dirt photos, framing it and charging admission for folks to see the great work.

I’d be very hesitant to give my personal information to police via a 3rd party website.

What you can’t say el_smufo is: “it’s obvious CSI hasn’t tried out the SBPD feed”. Okay?

  7. Boycott Boy February 21, 2012 at 6:15 pm #

Please ES….Put down the scanner and step away from the dark side!

El Smurfo, I mentioned Edhat only because you do every week on this site. When I saw that Edhat had linked to this site I thought it was a good thing. It reminded me of a song from OKLAHOMA!,

The farmer and the cowman should be friends.
Oh, the farmer and the cowman should be friends.
One man likes to push a plough, the other likes to chase a cow,
But that’s no reason why they cain’t be friends.

What a wonderfully weird thread. I think I’ll take my surrey with the fringe on top on outta here before CSI posts a Nixel link to an episode of On Patrol featuring Boycott Boy while Seibert photographs it for edhat.

Got my first Nixel message today…press release on the parking kiosk robberies that I read on KEYT hours ago. My opinion of the service stands.

  11. CSI February 22, 2012 at 7:03 pm #

Now you don’t have to go haunt KEYT website. Or read Roger at edscat. The daily crime news now comes to you. Think of this as a positive.

Except its the sanitized version they choose to release. I want to know everything my tax dollars are paying for both in real time (I.e. what’s that siren?) and in archive (police blotter) . This service provides nothing I can’t already get easily and pales in comparison to the simple county fire twitterbot.

Great! Where do I get my wasted tax dollars back?

  13. CSI February 23, 2012 at 8:31 am #

Thank you ES, for subsidizing my enjoyment of this new police information link.

Speaking of edhat there were some awfully cute photos of Dan’s cat Bob and friend up at edhat today. I am being serious not sarcastic and apart from some notable and many not notable postings there today I probably got the most enjoyment of the postings from that. Sharon Brynes article on different views of homelessness was best item here today for my visit to the site.

On to this nixle service its not bad not good either yet, however in a emergency in may be quite useful so I would withhold judgement, at any rate it makes one not have the need to watch KEYT later to see their take on the press release.

Agree, the photos of Dan’s cat were cute, but I also agreed with the commenter who wrote that Edhat is not Facebook. Unfortunately, though, he’s wrong: it’s definitely tending in that direction and often Facebook lite, if that’s possible, with the profusion of sunset/sunrise photos and the ridiculous comments.
