Did you know that Santa Barbara has an official color scheme?
First what they’re not: Definitely not tropical. And not very Mexican.
Earth tones, yes, but not so subtle. Mediterranean is getting closer.
According to a local historian and writer, Santa Barbara’s distinct colors are white, ivory, adobe, a darker red (on red-tiled roofs) black on wrought iron, and Santa Barbara blue, a blue with a fair amount of green in it. It’s a hard color to describe and match. A lot of local designs use blues, but they’re more a Pacific blue than a true Santa Barbara blue. Santa Barbara blue reflects a town on the coast.

What really makes Santa Barbara colors so special is the way the light shines on the town. Most of the California Coast extends north-south; not so in Santa Barbara. The city, its shoreline, and the mountains behind it extend east-west. What that means is Santa Barbara is bathed in a soft, often magical south light.
With that in mind…. the Santa Barbara View will be unveiling two new logo looks:

In the spirit of unmoderated comments, I’ll have to say the new logo sucks. Takes up way too much real estate and has the cartoony, unprofessional appearance I hate about that other popular local website that can’t seem to attract local business advertisers. At the very least, put the text next to the logo on the header so you don’t have a solid 2 inches of screen real estate wasted.
Good feedback, thank you. Agree that this version is a bit large… we’ll try the second version next. Work in progress, feedback appreciated!
You know, I think it’s just a formatting thing. On my larger monitor, the photo appears to the right. On my smaller screen, it’s underneath which takes up a ton of room. Should seriously consider something most local sites are lacking…A mobile version. John Dickson, the restaurant guy, has an iPhone version that works well on most mobile browsers, while many of the other local sites, including this one are mostly useless. Could be a real distinguishing characteristic for your site.
BTW, might consider using the Heller photos as more of a masthead, while you return to a simpler text logo above. If you’re going to be the next generation of local media, it wouldn’t hurt to start with a more familiar newspaper like format.
Good feedback, thank you. Now’s the time to chime in. Glad to see the comments open up.
