What Needs to be Repaired in Santa Barbara?

Following President Obama’s Jobs Bill, MoveOn.org sent out the following message… “It’s shameful that our bridges are literally crumbling while construction workers are unable to find employment. America’s infrastructure needs work, and Americans need jobs. The solution is obvious: Put people back to work repairing our bridges, dams, highways, schools, and the rest of our failing infrastructure. We’re putting pressure on Congress to pass a jobs plan that does just that. But we need to make the problem visible. That’s why the American Dream movement is setting out to find and photograph the jobs that need doing—and we need your help.”

The are asking people to  take a picture of a job that needs doing in our community; which leads to the question… what piece of Santa Barbara’s infrastructure needs repair?

What needs repairing in Santa Barbara is attitude: the streets around some of the schools, Franklin School, for instance, are littered with trash. That says what people think of the school and Santa Barbara itself, since the trash is not limited to the four plus blocks around the school. (The Eastside Library is quite free litter, unlike its immediate neighbor, Franklin.) Harding streets also are trashy.

Sorry – should be “The Eastside Library area is quite free of litter, unlike its immediate neighbor, Franklin School.”

West Downtown – every block needs sidewalk security lighting like they installed on West Anapamu if this is supposed to be a walkable part of town. Can’t ask people to stop using their cars and live downtown, when most sidewalks are dark and scary as soon as the sun goes down.

We need to pay down our debt and stop spending our children and grandchildren’s money.

I like your thinking! We left SB nearly 10 years ago……
The world and communities are never perfect, but we do see much more community volunteer projects in Nor Cal ( Redding) — most are preserving the natural resources, trash clean ups, etc. College students MUST donate so many hours to community volunteering. Unfortunately, SB seems to just get more liberal with the takers far exceeding the givers. We felt that tidal wave when we lived there. There is a big project this weekend on the Sacramento River Trail with 200 – 500 volunteers — watch the coverage at redding.com. I hear your pain, Ray.

Oh… now the jobs bill is the thing that will repair infrastructure. All the other money that was suppose to be used for infrastructure, the ha ha… shovel ready jobs stimulus fund went where? It’s not a jobs bill, it’s a tax increase… for everyone. More change without hope… unfortunately :(

One of the recent Republican debate candidates said his neighbors two dogs created more shovel ready dogs than the entire Obama administration. Love that injection of humor in these Repubilcan debates since they are castigated by the Progs as souless and mean. Nope, they are great guys and any one of them would be a fine choice to get it all in one package – Herman Cain moved from outlier to very appealing front runner mainly because he doesn’t take himself seriously but he certainly takes the issues seriously. Anyone missing the Republican debates is missing some grand political theater. We are well served by their willingness to present their cases and their lives to our scrutiny. There will be morning again in America.

One would hope our roads get repaired, they need it. I am wondering if the national jobs created to do this would be more or less than 1/2 %. (less) where are the real changes we were promised. close guantanimo, end the wars, more jobs, government transparency! no More bailouts, immigration? surprised if this gets posted.
